The Gibson Interview: Former Kiss Guitarist Bruce Kulick

“The soul of a human being and the hands of a legend” is how producer Jeremy Rubolino describes guitarist Bruce Kulick, with whom he worked on Kulick’s third and most recent solo album, BK3. The disc is receiving outstanding reviews worldwide and entered Billboard’s Heatseekers chart at No. 12.

With two solo albums to his credit, a wealth of touring and session work, and of course his years with KISS, Bruce Kulick is a guitarist’s guitarist. He has an innate understanding of what to play and when to play it, and can approach any genre of music with the necessary finesse or aggression to complement the song.

Throughout his successful career, Gibson has been an important part of Kulick’s story. He spoke to Gibson.com about what makes these instruments so special and integral to his sound.

What were your goals for BK3 as a singer, songwriter and guitarist?

My attitude was to have a no-compromise approach to getting the job done. I had already put out a couple of solo records, although I did those myself. This time I worked with a producer, Jeremy Rubolino, who had a real vision. Our discussions as we were writing and planning were to bring up the level of sounds, the studio, and everything that goes into making a record. We took the time and the money to do this, and it was worth it. We used my favorite KISS album, Revenge, as a benchmark to help guide us. My belief is that if you really strive for something and know what’s at the top of the mountain, you will keep climbing.

How did working with Jeremy take your playing to the next level?

Jeremy hears music differently from the average person. He hears it as a film composer, and he sees it on the music staff rather than on a guitar. Many guitarists work within the patterns that are comfortable for scales and fingering. Jeremy’s ideas are not where the fingers are on the guitar. He threw things to me that were out of the box and challenging because they weren’t comfortable fingering-wise. They weren’t harmonies or choices of notes that I would naturally have gone to. I had to interpret and make them my own. It was valuable for me. I do sessions every month, and I prefer to bring Jeremy with me to be sure that I give them my best.

Kiss had to cut short an intimate performance in London last night after confetti cannons caused the band breathing difficulties.

The American rock outfit left the stage at the 800-capacity Islington Academy after the cannons blasted confetti into the air during ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’.

Apparently the amount of

carbondioxide concentrated in the air of the arena made breathing difficult for both the band and those members of the audience closest to them.

“Once the confetti cannons went off, we barely made it off stage,” revealed singer Paul Stanley in a statement.

“None of us could breathe or catch our breath. Pretty scary and there was no way we could continue.

“We came out for the encores but couldn't get past one,” continued Stanley, whose bands still managed to play a crowd-pleasing, 12-song set. “All in all, an amazing night that left many breathless!"Kiss played the gig ahead of their forthcoming European tour.

KISS' APPEARENCE ON POPULAR SHOW RANKED HIGH IN RATINGS

When the hit show told legendary rockers KISS about a family of KISS fans in Gainesville, Florida, who started a home-based, non-profit music school while their own home was falling down around them, the band heeded the call during their recent North American KISS/Alive 35 tour.

A great rock concert can stand out in your mind for various reasons. I've been to quite a few of them, and though some were utterly forgettable, some are still burned deep in the heart. Seeing Paul McCartney live can actually leave you awestruck, and artists like U2 and Bruce Springsteen seem to take you to another place during their lives shows. In some ways, it's almost spiritual.

I love those artists. Always have. And it's no secret to some of our readers that I'm also a pretty big KISS fan. I've seen them about 30 times in concert and can honestly say that when it comes to live bands, they remain among the best. Ace Frehley, the group's original guitarist, is also still an all-time favorite. And it was exactly 25 years ago this week that Frehley gave one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen. And it was right here in Northeast Pennsylvania -- in Scranton -- at the old West Side Theater.

I was 17 years old, and it was the spring of my senior year in high school. A group of good friends and I all loved Ace, and since he had left KISS a few years prior -- right around the time we were finally old enough to start going to their shows -- we'd never seen him play live. I can still remember the day the show was announced and how we were all calling one another and were absolutely over-the-top excited. Within minutes, we were all running off to our little part-time high school jobs, making sure we put in for the night off from work. I called one friend who lived quite a few miles away and said I was on my way over to pick him up. He still jokes to this day that right after I called, he threw on Frehley's 1978 solo album, and before he'd heard even one song, I was already out in front of his house laying on the horn.

Did I mention we were excited?A few weeks later, it was time for the big show. March 3, 1985. The concert venue was about a 30-minute ride from my house. We left about 12 hours early. There were so many of us that we had to take two cars. Even though Ace wasn't going to come on until around 9 p.m., we were there by late morning. Of course, we spent most of the day on a zany quest trying to meet him. After learning from some of the people setting up for the show that he was still nowhere near the venue, we decided to scope out a few nearby hotels, and though we did eventually find the right one and had a pretty close encounter with the great guitarist, we had no luck in our attempt to hang out with the Spaceman.
