HARD ROCK NIGHTS RELEASES IT'S TOP ALBUM'S LIST

HARD ROCK NIGHT'S BEST OF 2009:
3. Ace Frehley Anomaly – The spaceman returns with his first solo effort in twenty years, debuting at #27 on the Billboard charts upon its September release. With longtime drummer Anton Fig in tow, Ace delivers a hard rocking record that will not disappoint longtime fans or newcomers to the Frehley fan base. Best song: “Outer Space.”

2. KISS Sonic Boom – Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are the only original members of KISS left in the band, with Tommy Thayer taking on lead guitar duties and Eric Singer returning behind the drumkit, this time with the Catman’s facepaint. Many had doubts about the ability of the band to bring the rock, but those doubts quickly evaporated on the first listen of this disc. Sonic Boom is a return to the early 1980s sound for KISS – part hard rock, part pop – and it works just as well now as it did back then. Best song: “Never Enough.”

The UK's "Classic ROCK MAGAZINE" has announced it's top 100 of 2009 and Kiss' Modern Day Delilah came in at an impressive #11!
11. Modern Day Delilah – KissFrom the 2009 album Sonic Boom. So, can Kiss still rack out the lines (music, that is)? Hell, yeah. A deceptively simple platform-booted anthem – but only Kiss could pull it off.

PAUL STANLEY DOING "PHANTOM" IN VEGAS?

IS PAUL STANLEY DOING THE "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" SOON?
Hard to say but it's a question. Why? TMZ reported Paul Stanley, his wife Erin and their kids out at Beverly Glen in Los Angeles yesterday. The video, shot yesterday 12/21, saw a short-haired, clean cut, Stanley, just as he looked when he did "Phantom of the Opera" in Toronto in 1999. Now why would Paul Stanley cut his hair when he has a KISS European tour in May? It's very possible he could play the "Phantom" in Vegas while KISS is on hiatus until May. There was much talk about this in the press a few months ago and again heated up in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun this past November. Stanley has a mulit-million dollar condo at the Palms.

“Yeah, I had been in Las Vegas, having meetings, and we’d discussed that. I’d played the role before (in the Toronto production), but for a lot of reason it wasn’t to be. I think it’s a great show. Terrific. I still intend on doing it on Broadway, but there are only so many hours in the day, you know?” Paul said in an interview with John Katsilometes November 22 when KISS played the Pearl Theatre at the Palms in Las Vegas in November.
The "PHANTOM - LAS VEGAS SPECTACULAR" is currently playing at the fantastic- The Venetian.http://www.phantomlasvegas.com/

GENE SIMMONS & ERIC SINGER VISIT BOYS & GIRL'S CLUB

By Nathan McIntire, Staff Writer
PASADENA STAR NEWS

MONROVIA,CA. - Children at the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills discovered Monday that the Demon and the Catman aren't nearly as imposing without their makeup.
Gene Simmons and Eric Singer, also known respectively as the Demon and the Catman of the legendary rock band KISS, visited the club and signed autographs while imploring the kids to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
Though the lead singer and drummer of KISS didn't wear their patented white and black make-up, Simmons did oblige repeated requests to show his infamously long, slithering tongue.
"I would stick my tongue out, but look how dirty the floor is," Simmons told one child before relenting.

ACE FREHLEY GUITAR WORLD INTERVIEW

Ace Frehley: Space Oddity
By Jan Uhelszki (Photo by Justin Borucki)
Ace Frehley
Originally published in Guitar World, December 2009
He was the odd man out in Kiss, but Ace Frehley came into his own on his solo records. Twenty years since his last release, the original Space Ace returns to earth with Anomaly.

Ace Frehley strides purposefully into a sushi bar in North Hollywood, his bearing every inch the rock star. Dark glasses hide the strange downward cast of his eyes—an inheritance from his Dutch mother—and he sports a black beard that gives him the look of an inscrutable warlord, conferring a gravity and a self-assurance that he never had before, not even in 1977, when Kiss were named the most popular band in America by no less an authority than the Gallup Poll. “That gave me a sense of false confidence,” Frehley says of the honor. “For a while I believed that we were better than we were.”
At the time of our meeting, Frehley is just weeks from releasing Anomaly, his first solo album in more than 20 years, which will be issued in September on his own Bronx Born Records label. The new songs ripple with authority and radiate a sense of danger that recalls the wanton spirit and fire-breathing heat of his early years with Kiss. The track “Genghis Khan” is a Kashmiri nightmare wrought in guitar exotica, while the instrumental “Fractured Quantum” picks up the frenetic thread Frehley began on his self-titled 1978 solo debut and continued with on his subsequent records. Then there’s his indulgent cover of Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” which recalls some of a rock band’s racier exploits. “Oh, I got my share,” Frehley says, when queried about Kiss’ body count.

FROM ROCK HALL PRESS ROOM

December 15, 2010—New York— Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges as its 2010 artist inductees. Also being inducted this year as individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award will be David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Elle Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. The ceremony will take place on March 15, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and will air live on Fuse, Madison Square Garden’s national music television network, as part of the three-year broadcast deal between the Foundation and Fuse.
“We are very happy to present this year’s inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as they represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll and people that have contributed immeasurably to our business” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President & CEO Joel Peresman.
The performer inductees are: ABBA, GENESIS, JIMMY CLIFF, THE HOLLIES, THE STOOGES

NO ROCK HALL FOR KISS THIS YEAR

Does it really matter? Sure, you want your heroes to be accepted by their peers. But really, does it matter? The Rock Hall is nothing more than a bunch of blow-hards that think Bob Dylan is the second coming of Christ. Dylan is talented, sure, but he's no Kiss.
The fans say it all. Thirty fives years later, Kiss is still selling records and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world. Kiss gives the fan their money's worth. Am I dissapointed? Sure. But Kiss still puts out for their fans, have changed the face of rock and roll (literally) and have changed it's members and it's look more than a few occassions. They still pump it out. The still give 200%. Kiss is Kiss and that's all that matters.

KISS GETS SNUBBED AGAIN BY ROCK HALL

KISS GETS NO LOVE FROM ROCK HALL OF FAME

By Sean Daly, Times Pop Music Critic St. Petersburg Times

It's the tongue, isn't it?
For the 11th year in a row, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that barely respected barometer of musical achievement, has blatantly snubbed Gene Simmons and Kiss for induction into its sort-of-hallowed establishment.
What gives?! Has the Hall's small, totally biased nominating board — including Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, who's more of a Dylan/Springsteen guy anyway — never driven down a highway in a rusted Camaro cranking Detroit Rock City while eating a six-pack of chalupas?
It's called life, gang. You should try it some time. Heck, in a recent interview, Simmons intimated that he bedded my mother — and I still think he and his glam progenitors deserve to be in!
Instead, the Hall will welcome Swedish disconauts ABBA, prog-pop's Genesis, reggae star Jimmy Cliff, Brit harmonizers the Hollies and Midwestern punks the Stooges as 2010 inductees. That's a swell list, but it's not very dramatic —unless you're wagering whether the Stooges' Iggy Pop will wear a shirt to the festivities or Peter Gabriel will return to Genesis to give Phil Collins a noogie.
If Kiss is feeling blue, the guys should call Iggy, who knows all about HOF malaise: "We've been rejected seven times," he told Rolling Stone. "It started to feel like Charlie Brown and the football. I had about two hours of a strong emotional reaction after hearing the news. It felt like vindication. Then I kind of scratched my head and thought, 'Am I still cool? Or is that over now?' "
The glitzy, ritzy HOF ceremony will take place March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Nonperformer inductees include record exec David Geffen and songwriting partners Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
With the Hollies getting in, that means Graham Nash is now a double-inductee — while the men who gave us Christine Sixteen are sitting on the sidelines. Somewhere Paul Stanley is crying on his exposed nipples. And I don't blame him at all.
After ignoring the fire-spewin', blood-spittin' Kiss for 10 years, the Hall nominated the hard-luck men for 2010 inclusion. But alas, it was just a tease. Suddenly, Lick It Up sounds a lot like taps.

KISS:EXTREME MAKEOVER:HOME EDITION DETAILS

In the spirit of the KISS Army, when the ABC hit show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" told legendary rockers KISS (www.KISSonline.com) about a family of needy KISS fans in Gainesville, Florida, who started a home-based, non-profit music school while their own home is falling down around them, the band heeded the call and launched the offense during their Tulsa stop on their North American KISS/Alive 35 tour.

Los Angeles, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire), December 9, 2009 -- In the spirit of the KISS Army, when the ABC hit show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" told legendary rockers KISS (http://www.kissonline.com/) about a family of needy KISS fans in Gainesville, Florida, who started a home-based, non-profit music school while their own home is falling down around them, the band heeded the call and launched the offense during their Tulsa stop on their North American KISS/Alive 35 tour.

Tobin and Jill Wagstaff, a couple with four children, operate Studio Percussion, Inc., a school that currently serves about 200 people, half of which receive financial aid or a full scholarship. The non-profit school can only afford to pay Tobin, 29, a salary, so Jill, 32, must also work as a pre-school teacher to help pay the bills. Their utter devotion to their family, school, and community leaves little time and resources to tend to their home that is in dire need of repair. The floors and rooftops are completely rotting away and the electrical system throughout the house is faulty.
In just seven days, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team leader Ty Pennington, the design team, and the Gainesville community are rebuilding their home while the show sent the family on a surprise rock and roll vacation.

The Wagstaff Family, who are huge KISS fans, flew to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to meet the band who played at the BOK Center in Tulsa on December 8 as part of their North American KISS/Alive 35 tour in support of Sonic Boom, their first album in 11 years.

The next morning KISS and The Wagstaff Family, on behalf of Gibson and Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, a non-profit music group, met at the Wilson Middle School in Tulsa to present $100,000 in instruments from Gibson to the school as well as their own school back home in Florida. Some of the students at the school in Tulsa even donned the famous KISS make up to show their support.

The KISS episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is scheduled to air in March/April, 2010.

KISS VISIT TULSA'S WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL - VIDEO

KISS payed a visit to Tulsa's Wilson Middle School (while shooting a segment for ABC's "Extreme Home Makeover") to present the Mr Holland's Opus Program with brand new instruments. Paul Stanley is a huge supporter of this program.

Caleb Starr, principal at Wilson, said producers from "Extreme Makeover" approached him with an offer of free musical instruments from Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation as part of an upcoming edition of the show.

"They're rebuilding the home of a music teacher and his wife," said Starr, "and the teacher wanted to give musical instruments to a school in need. They asked if we would be interested and we jumped on the opportunity."

A bus carrying the music teacher's family, KISS members and show producers arrived at Wilson, 1127 S. Columbia Ave., at 10 a.m. The group took a tour of the band room and surveyed the dilapidated musical instruments with Wilson music teacher Doug Scott. KISS frontman Paul Stanley, a passionate supporter of the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, went from classroom to classroom gathering students to become face-painted members of a KISS mini army. The event-filled day culminated with a KISS/"Extreme Makeover"/Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation rally where KISS formally presented the instruments.

And then there's the jaw-dropping guest list, boasting members of KISS, the Knack, Toto, Mötley Crüe and more.

"Bruce was to KISS what Ronnie Wood is to the Stones," says Rocket Science GM & Fanboy Enterprises A&R executive Ken Gullic. "The new guy to one generation, and the long standing stable horse to another.

"After getting his solo feet wet with 2001's Audio Dog and 2003's Transformer, Kulick - the often unheralded driving force on 12 years of classic KISS records, from 1984's Animalize to 1992's Revenge - assembled his own rock 'n' roll dream team. The roster: KISS icon Gene Simmons and up-and-coming son Nick (each vocally appearing separately), longtime friend John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Kulick's own Union), Knack mainman Doug Fieger, Toto axe authoritarian Steve Lukather, Edguy power metal stalwart Tobias Sammet and even current KISS drummer Eric Singer.

"Many albums lack cohesion with different vocalists, but I know that my guitar playing is the glue on BK3," Kulick says. "There was the clear goal of making absolutely the best record that I could put together. I feel like this is my Revenge."

BK3 will be released February 2nd on Fanboy /Rocket Science Ventures.

KISS TO APPEAR ON "EXTREME MAKEOVER:HOME EDITION"

KISS Presents Wilson Middle School With Gift Of Music

NewsOn6.com

TULSA, OK -- Legendary rock band KISS is visiting Tulsa's Wilson Middle School on Wednesday to shoot a segment of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

"I can't believe what all they have planned," said Caleb Starr, principal at Wilson. "This is going to be an amazing experience for the kids and the adults."

Starr said producers from Extreme Makeover approached him with an offer of free musical instruments from Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation as part of an upcoming edition of the show.

"They're rebuilding the home of a music teacher and his wife," said Starr, "and the teacher wanted to give musical instruments to a school in need. They asked if we would be interested, and we jumped on the opportunity."

Starr said he was thrilled to learn KISS would be at the school to formally present the 40 new musical instruments to Wilson students, including violins, trumpets, saxophones and flutes.

Students are also getting their faces painted just like the members of KISS.

According to the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation web site, the organization donates both new and refurbished instruments to school and after-school music programs that lack the resources to keep up with equipment loss due to attrition, depreciation and wear over time.

TULSA MAN DESIGNS KISS' ANIMATOR- NEWS REPORT VIDEO

KISS RETURNS: CALLING DR. LOVE IN AUSTIN

By Manuel Nauta/SPIN Earth
CLICK HERE to view additional photos from the Austin show

Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer are back together for the KISS Alive 35 tour which rocked the Frank Erwin Center Friday night December 4, 2009 in Austin, Texas. After selling more than a 100 million albums worldwide, the makeup has come back on and they're touring their new album Sonic Boom. The Frank Erin Center was almost sold out and there was a mixed crowd of young and middle aged fans. Oddly enough I did not see many KISS face-paintings on the audience members this time.

Come 9 p.m., the giant curtain with the KISS logo came down to a screaming audience, large clouds of white smoke rolled off the stage making way for Paul, Gene and Tommy! Eric Singer, the drummer was safely perched high on top of the 12 feet tall KISS logo, making him nearly invisible to my camera. It was great to hear some good old fashion rock-n-roll, no drum machines, backup singers or endless stage dancers to distract the crowd from the actual music. There were of course the 30 feet tall flames of fire shooting up from the stage, fire works explosions and Paul's fire spewing guitar, layers of white make-up, black leather galore, and the iconic platform boots.

In addition to playing their mega hits such as Calling Dr. Love and Detroit Rock City they played songs such as Modern Day Delilah and Say Yeah form their new album Sonic Boom. Which, according to Paul Stanley, we should "run out and get from our nearest Walmart." This was one of the strangest on stage endorsements I have heard lately. The new songs have the classic rock-n-roll sound that will be loved by both the KISS aficionados and new fans alike. Judging from the enthusiastic, alcohol filled, yelling and screaming audience, classic rock-n-roll is ALIVE AND WELL, at least in Austin.

CASABLANCA'S LARRY HARRIS INTERVIEWED

AND PARTY EVERY DAY!
by Michaelangelo Matos/A.V. Club
December 8, 2009
Pictured: Larry Harris and Gene
backstage, 1975.
Larry Harris broke into the record business in 1971 when his cousin, Buddah Records bigwig Neil Bogart, gave him a shot at local radio promotion—Harris became Bogart’s right-hand man. He moved with Bogart from New York to Los Angeles in 1973 to co-found the legendary Casablanca Records, which later expanded to include a movie company that produced The Deep, Midnight Express, and Thank God It’s Friday, the lattermost essentially a 90-minute ad for the record label. Casablanca at its height hardly needed the exposure: Its signings included Kiss, Parliament, Donna Summer, Cher, and The Village People, as well as the early comedy records of Robin Williams. Casablanca was also notoriously profligate, spending lavishly and doing whatever it took to appear luxuriantly successful—something that was seldom the case on paper. The company typified late-’70s excess: drugs, especially cocaine and Quaaludes, proliferated. Employees were having sex on desktops (sometimes with help from the musicians), when Bogart wasn’t setting fire to them. And until co-owner and distributor PolyGram stepped in to put the overspending to a halt, free-flowing finances were the order of the day.

All this is detailed in no-holds-barred fashion in Harris’ new memoir, And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records, co-written with Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs. The most dirt-filled music book since Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt, And Party Every Day is always entertaining and frequently jaw-dropping, from Harris’ description of acting as runner for an enormous amount of cocaine for Curtis Mayfield and several female hotel guests during the Buddah days to tales of calling his own positions on the Billboard charts. The A.V. Club spoke with Harris over lunch at a deli in midtown Manhattan about Gene Simmons’ business acumen, George Clinton’s drug habits, wet T-shirt contests, and much, much more.

The A.V. Club: Leaving aside the obvious question of your age, if we were conducting this interview in 1978, how would it be different?

Larry Harris: Well, Casablanca would be riding the wave, especially in 1978. Disco was king. Kiss was still huge—they’re pretty big now, but not huge like they were. And I’d probably be slurring on Quaaludes.
AVC: Was this book the first time you’d attempted to tell this story?
LH: When anybody new I met found out that I was running Casablanca, they’d always say, “How was it?” I would tell them little bits and pieces of the story, and they’d inevitably say, “You should write a book.” Then one day, about 12 years ago, I started stream-of-consciousness just writing, from the beginning. Then I put it away, took it out, put it away. I’d tell other people stories, and then I’d remember stories I’d forgotten about. Since the book was written, a lot of people I used to work with call up and say, “Hey, you didn’t have this story in.”
I sent it to some publishers, and they said “No.” Then I got a call from Lydia Criss, [Kiss drummer] Peter Criss’ wife, who’d written a book three years ago called Sealed With A Kiss. It’s this six-pound, 1,500 pictures, unbelievable book. There were a couple pictures they didn’t know the people in. So her co-writers [Gooch and Suhs] got in contact with me. I said, “By the way, I’ve got a book I wrote.” Doesn’t everybody? I sent them my draft, and asked if they wanted to work on it with me. Even after they touched it up a little, still—nobody. We talked to people who were 22—never heard of Casablanca, never heard of Donna Summer. Then this guy at Backbeat Books, Mike Edison. Of all the artists we had, he was a Parliament fan. That’s how we got the deal.
AVC: The book is obviously Kiss-heavy. Was that because of your co-authors?
LH: They didn’t change anything. What they did for me is a lot of research. I didn’t remember the dates. I didn’t know if it was May 15 or April 3. I mean, I knew what year it was, but I don’t remember that after 30 years. They tightened up a few places. They interviewed a few people that we put into the book. They got me to do interviews with some of the people I worked with, which I hadn’t done. I always felt it should be like a fly on the wall. Even though I was involved with all this stuff, it was kind of surrealistic. I speak to Gene Simmons, or I did, every six months, until he promised he would do the foreword, and then he backed out.
AVC: Did he read what you’d written about him as unflattering?
LH: I didn’t think I said anything unflattering about them, really. We chose the chapters we sent him very carefully. He said his publisher wouldn’t let him do it. I told that to [former Kiss manager] Bill Aucoin, and Aucoin said, “That’s bullshit.” I told that to [former Kiss manager] Joyce Biawitz, who also said, “That’s ridiculous. He’s writing two pages? Why would his fucking publisher care?” And I did speak to Paul [Stanley]. He was on a friend of mine’s radio show promoting his artwork; he’s an artist now. My friend said, “Oh, we have a call from a listener.” I got on and said, “I took you to a Who show in 1973.” The Who is my favorite band. The show was at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and that’s where I decided, and where we all decided, that they should be breaking guitars. When I first saw Kiss, they were pretty unable to move around. They were in black leather; Ace [Frehley] and Paul and probably Gene weren’t used to wearing platforms all the time. Early pictures of them, they wore regular street shoes. At some point, even when they were out of makeup, they wore the platforms just so they could be larger than life.

KISS ROCKS TULSA'S BOK CENTER

KISS LIVE AT BOK CENTER, TULSA, OK., 12/08/09
By JENNIFER CHANCELLOR /World Scene Writer
TULSA WORLD
Nearly a decade after its farewell tour, the larger-than-life, greasepaint, leather and platform-wearing quartet still stomps out hits. Big time.

Some 35 years after its inception, Tuesday night’s KISS concert at the BOK Center was Disney gone horror show. When it comes to rock 'n’ roll, that’s a very, very good thing.
From the audience pit railing, a pint-sized devil-faced Gene Simmons hoisted his rock hand at the real deal, who towered over him and returned the salute. The devil grinned and twirled, cape spinning out as he strutted away.

The night was full of “classic vintage KISS,” yelled Stanley. He lead a cheeky, rock pep-rally and cheering contests between youngsters and oldsters. Of course, they all won.

Indeed, the set list was heavy with early classics that exploded in old-school showmanship. “Deuce,” “Strutter,” “Hotter Than Hell,” “Calling Dr. Love,” “Shock Me,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Shout it Out Loud,” “Lick it Up” and more pounded out with fierce volume and ecstatic cries from the crowd.

They struck out on a vintage hit parade that included party anthems about women, sex, private parts, women, sex acts and bombast. And sex. And bombast. And women.

KISS WAL-MART AD

Walmart produced an inhouse promo for the "Sonic Boom" campaign with posing as Wal-Mart employees. This ad has so much humor in it, Wal-Mart should have ran this commercial on tv to promote "SONIC BOOM." However there was no tv advertising (that I saw) for "SONIC BOOM" as there was ads for AC/DC's "Black Ice."

Broken Arrow Man Designs Animation For KISS Concerts

PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES:
By Jeffrey Smith, The News On 6
BROKEN ARROW, OK -- A famous rock-n-roll band has turned a Broken Arrow computer designer into a behind-the-scenes star.

KISS will play the BOK Center on December 8 as part of their 35th anniversary tour. One of the stars of the show has called Oklahoma home his entire life.
When KISS performs in Tulsa on Tuesday, fans won't just be staring at the legendary tongue of Gene Simmons, but they'll also be enjoying the animation of a Broken Arrow computer designer. Kyle Stauffer designed all of the video that goes along with the music.

"Kind of like mini music videos that play, you know, behind all the songs, the eye candy and flashy colors and pretty images," said Kyle Stauffer, KISS designer.

All the flashy images were designed by Stauffer in his living room.

GENE SIMMONS TO APPEAR ON CBS HIT

GENE TO APPEAR ON "I GET THAT A LOT!"/the Live Feed

CBS is bringing back its celebrity-filled prank special "I Get That a Lot," where famous faces work menial jobs and confuse unsuspecting customers.
This next edition features, according to the press release, "Julie Chen, Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, Rachael Ray, Gene Simmons and Tony Hawk." (Yup, Les Moonves' wife was listed first. Somebody in the PR department knows on which side their bread is buttered.)
The first installment aired on April Fools of last year and drew a stunning 3.4 rating with no lead-in. What's surprising is how long its taken for CBS to air another installment (heck, if this aired on NBC, it would have taken over the network's whole 8 p.m. hour). "Get That a Lot" returns Wednesday, Jan. 6.
