" I produced, shot and edited this segment for NBC LA. Legendary News Anchor and friend, Colleen Williams was very supportive and willing to do this when I tossed the idea. Mr Paul Stanley was very gracious letting me into his home. Kiss/Paul Stanley Publicist, LEE RUNCHEY of LCO PR was most professional and accomodating. I look forward to working with all of them again soon."

KISS & The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame... Not This Year
Kiss Is Once Again Snubbed By the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame
The nominations are in and Kiss isn't on the list...once again. The RARHOF, again, continues nominate to turn a blind eye (ear!) to bands and performers who have had long, successful and ongoing careers. This year's nominees are Guns N Roses, Donna Summer, Heart, Freddie King, WAR and the Beastie Boys. Now, we aren't saying that these artists don't deserve it, but we still can't see why a band like Kiss, have influenced so many successful bands and artists today, do not get a RARHOF nomination and induction, is a slap in the face not only to Kiss, but to Kiss fans, rock fans in general and to the music community.
Kiss was nominated in 2009.

KISS Beer and Wine Raise a Glass to Rock And Roll
from KISSONLINE,Rewine and KISS Partner to Create Zin Fire Zinfandel and Destroyer Beer
Legendary rock band KISS is raising a glass to celebrate its show-stopping spirit with spirits! KISS and wine distributor Rewine today announced the signing of a European licensing deal to create rare rock and roll vintages of KISS-themed Zin Fire Wine and Destroyer Beer. The private-label liquors, which feature customized KISS packaging, will be available in Europe this fall.
KISS Zin Fire is a bold and fruity 2010 California Zinfandel --- the result of a cool, long growing season that promoted fantastic flavor, acidity, and color. A brazen blend of blackberry and pepper gives the vintage a hard-rocking kick and spicy smooth finish.
KISS Destroyer Beer is an easy-to-drink beer in the best German tradition. A careful brewing process creates its great head of foam and a balanced flavor, like an original “Pils.” The brew will come in both a 33 cl (11.2 oz) bottle and 50 cl (16.9 oz) can.
“This isn’t just something we put a label on. We wanted wine and beer unique to KISS and we got it, said Paul Stanley of KISS. “This stuff will set your taste buds on fire.”
“If you love beer and wine, this one is for you!” said Gene Simmons of KISS.
“Working with KISS was a fantastic experience,” said Joakim Perani, managing director/partner of Rewine. “The band members were incredible partners in creating something that fans of fiery rock music, as well as great wine and beer, will enjoy.”
KISS Zin Fire Wine and Destroyer Beer will launch in Sweden, Norway, and Finland, followed by Denmark, The Netherlands, and the UK. Wine will be available at retail stores on September 20, 2011, at a price of 11-14 euros. Beer will be released in mid-October, at a price of 1.5-2 euros. Additional distribution details are online at www.kissrockdrinks.com.

Justin Timberlake to Star in Neil Bogart Biopic
from Kevin Jagernauth/IndiWire Blog Network
From singer to actor to now playing a record executive in a forthcoming biopic, things are coming back full circle—sort of—for Justin Timberlake in a film that should be packed wall-to-wall with some great music.
Record executive and producer Neil Bogart is now getting the biopic treatment as Deadline reports that Timberlake will star in and produce “Spinning Gold.” Written by Tim Bogart (yes, Neil’s son, who also penned “The I Inside” and “Jungle Book: Lost Treasure”) the film will tell the story of his father’s rags to riches tale as a Jewish kid from Brooklyn who founded Casablanca Records and found fortune releasing records by KISS, Donna Summer and Parliament. While nowadays bands make it or break it on a single record, Bogart was known for sticking with KISS through their middling sales of their first few albums before their breakthrough Alive. He also helped usher in the use of the 12” record as a singles format when he released Donna Summer’s “Love To Love You Baby” in its full 17-minute length. Casablanca Records also backed the insane Parliament tours as well.
The story is tinged with a bit of big screen drama as Bogart succumbed to cancer at the young age of 39. But even as he battled illness, his ear was firmly still to the ground and one of his last signings was Joan Jett. “Spinning Gold” is being produced by Boardwalk Entertainment Group, founded by Bogart’s sons, and it will be an indie flick but with a studio sized budget. The hunt is on for a director and the plan is to get it in front of cameras by the end of 2012. And yes, there will be a soundtrack album as well.

KISS' "PSYCHO-CIRCUS" Released on this Day- 1998
Kiss' Reunion album, PSYCHO-CIRCUS, was released on this day, September 22, 1998. The album reunited Peter, Paul, Ace and Gene for the first time since 1977's Love Gun album. It's the band's 18th studio release. Unfortunately, controversy surrounded the album, after it was revealed that the entire band did not appear on the album. Session musicians were used in most of the recording process. It's been suggested that Bruce Kulick played on some tracks but most of the work was done by current Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer performing the leads. Kevin Valentine did most of the drumming with the exception of Ace Frehley's Into The Void and You Wanted The Best (featured Ace on lead guitar on only those two tracks) with the latter single featuring all members singing lead on the track. Peter Criss sang lead (and played drums only on "Into the Void" and "I Finally Found My Way") on the Paul Stanley penned ballad, I Finally Found My Way.
Paul Stanley's statement regarding the album's lack of full band involvement, "We tried to do a Kiss album, and it was an ill-fated attempt because there was no real band," and continued by adding "For a band to make a great album, it has to share a common purpose, and we didn’t have it."
Despite the controversy, Psycho-Circus debuted on Billboard's 200 Albums Charts at #3 selling 110,000 copies in it's first week and certified Gold status by the RIAA on October 22, 1998.
The first single, Psycho-Circus( blw Into the Void), released in August and featured a 3-D video (as well as the tour) reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts. Two singles followed (without videos) You Wanted The Best reached #22 and the third single We Are One did not chart in the US but charted in many other parts of the world.
The tour to support the album kicked off at Dodger Stadium on Halloween night, which was part of FOX's Halloween Spooktacular featuring the first couple of songs going out on a live broadcast, and featured 3-D effects via video screens never really hit the mark.

Gene Simmons Comments on Discovering Van Halen, "Nah...I was there"
Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley Comment on Van Halen
Courtesy of The Van Halen NewsDesk
http://www.vhnd.com/
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from KISS contributed to two coffee table photo books, Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen, both published by legendary rock photographer Neil Zlozower. The Van Halen News Desk has the exclusive on both quotes.
“Once upon a time, when it meant something to be a rock star and groupies prided themselves on whom they had spent the night with, I was invited to the Starwood Club in L.A. to see a band called The Boyz. I took Bebe Buell, she of Playboy/Liv Tyler/etc. fame, and sat next to Rodney Bingenheimer, king of the L.A. nightlife, and waited for the opening band to come on.
“Life is what happens to you when you least expect it. I saw Van Halen. I was stunned. They killed.
“Within two songs I was waiting for them backstage and immediately offered to sign them and take them into the studio. It seems there was a — I kid you not — yogurt manufacturer who was waiting to finance the band. I begged them not to do that. And, in a short time, I flew them to New York, signed them to my Man of 1,000 Faces production company and took them into Electric Ladyland Studios to do a thirteen-song demo. I also bought Dave some platform shoes and leather pants.
“I took the demo and showed it to the rest of the KISSers and Bill Aucoin, our then-manager. No one got it. I was shocked. I gave the demo back to the band, told them I had a tour to go on and afterward I would try to get them a record deal, but until then, I tore up our contract and set them free. It didn’t take them long to get on Warner Bros.
“Did I discover Van Halen? Nah . . . I was there. I saw. I knew. I am a fan.”
— Gene Simmons
“Lita Ford and I went to see Ed play with Van Halen one night at the Starwood in 1977, and I was blown away and brought Gene with me the next night. Their charisma, stage presence, and take-no-prisoners attitude coupled with great songs, killer arrangements, and airtight playing made them undeniable. Everything about Edward, from his groundbreaking technique to his hacked-up Frankenstein guitar, made him the heart of the band, and clearly someone who was playing on all levels, by his own rules.
“So many have tried to copy his style, but it’s always just made it more obvious that although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it pales next to the real deal.”

Archie Meets Rock Band Kiss
ABC.com
Two iconic American figures have joined forces, but it may not be the ones you expect. All-American teen Archie Andrews has partnered with rock ‘n’ roll legend Kiss in an upcoming series called, eponymously, ”Archie Meets Kiss.”
The four-part series launches Nov. 30 and, in the words of writer Alex Segura of Archie Comics, “brings together two pieces of Americana for the first time. ”
Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics, is a self-described “crazy Kiss fan,” even having a Kiss-themed party for his son’s Bar Mitzvah.
But Goldwater told ABC News that the idea of a partnership between Archie and Kiss came from Kiss bassist-vocalist Gene Simmons.
“One day I was lucky enough to get a call,” Goldwater said. Simmons flew him out to L.A. to discuss the idea of a partnership. “His ideas were extremely inspiring, and we thought it would be a wonderful thing for Archie,” Goldwater said.
The series will be a topsy-turvy, magical tale of a spell gone wrong that involves Archie and the gang, and Sabrina meeting the famed rockers.
Archie Comics hopes that the collision of characters will be enough to pull in a full audience — one that includes older Americans who grew up with the comics and younger fans too.
“Younger kids will enjoy the magical nature while older audiences will enjoy old rock ‘n’ roll,” said Goldwater. The Archie comic turns 70 years old this December, which is eight years older than Simmons.
For parents worried that Kiss’ mature themes may be too much for younger kids, Simmons offers words of comfort.
“Kiss is all things to all people,” Simmons told the New York Post. “A 5- or 10-year-old fan doesn’t look at the lascivious nature of my tongue the same way someone much older would — such a thing is not obvious to a 5-year-old, nor should it be.”
Goldwater, in addition to hoping the series and comic does well, has one other wish.
“Maybe the kids will even pick up a Kiss album,” said Goldwater.
Fans can expect to rock ‘n’ roll but maybe not all night … Archie and the gang have a curfew.

Gene Simmons to appear at 3-D Summit in Hollywood
Ron Henson, American Film Institute Conservatory Arts Examiner
Examiner.com
The annual 3D Summit that is being held at the Hollywood/Highland Center today September 20, 2011 through Thursday September 22nd just adjacent to the Renaissance Hotel in the epicenter of Hollywood is well under way. The first presentation was on the mobile entertainment side as there is a 3D Entertainment Summit running in conjunction with the Mobile 3D Summit. The first group of speakers included Gene Simmons of rock-n-roll fame (KISS) who is here promoting Ortsbo. One of Gene’s points was that marketers and the shakers and movers in 3D Mobile technologies can no longer take a sort of egocentric (the word he used was “arrogant”) attitude that if people want to do business with us or use our products, they have to learn English. That’s an attitude that perhaps worked during the height of the British Empire but it doesn’t work today. The appeal of Ortsbo is obvious. Remember the universal translator from Star Trek TNG and Enterprise? We have that here on earth with Ortsbo. Their product is a translation matrix that works on social media. In fact, during the presentation there was a display of what appeared to be tweets from the 3D Summit. Whoever was controlling the projection kept changing languages. In fact, Gene Simmons speaks four languages including Hungarian and German. “People in the mobile industry point to mobile. People in print point to print and people on the internet point to computers and technology but my philosophy that affects my bottom line is leave no stone unturned. In other words it’s important to be mobile in your content—with your message. Variety is a good example. They have an Internet presence so the notion of mobile is becoming more and more seductive. You want to be with the consumer wherever they go but if that’s the only thing you do you’re going to leave lots of checks that are on the table elsewhere so you’ve got to connect things.”

KISS "CRAZY NIGHTS" Released 1987
Kiss' 14th studio album, CRAZY NIGHTS, was released on September 18, 1987.
It was the first Kiss album to heavily rely on keyboards which was a departure from the band's musical style.
Originally the album was to be called "Who Dares Wins" but as Gene simmons recalls,
"During a photo session our wardrobe girl had this commando patch lying around with 'Who Dares Wins' on it, and I said: "Hey, what a great idea for an album title!" Then she brought it over to Paul who said the same thing. We ended up not using it because it didn't look good in print, and it sounded as if no one would understand it"
The album was produced by Ron Nevison.
"Dial L for Love" written by Gene, Eric Carr and Adam Mitchell originally for the album will appear on the upcoming Eric Carr CD.
The album peaked on the US Billboard Charts at #18 (#4 in the UK) and spawned 3 video/singles with "Crazy Crazy Nights" at #65 and "Reason To Live" at #64. The video for "Turn On The Night" was filmed live at a show in Worcester, MA.
KISS "LICK IT UP" Released 1983
LICK IT UP, Kiss 11th studio album and the first for the band to appear without make-up was released on September 18, 1983. Kiss appeared on MTV for a special unmasking, the first time the band appeared without make-up in public on the same day the album was released.
The album peaked at #24 on the US Billboard Album Charts with the single "Lick It Up" at #66. The videos for the title single and "All Hell's Breakin; Loose" were MTV staples receiving constant airplay.
The album was produced by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Michael James Jackson.
Rick Derringer played lead guitar on "Exciter."
With the "Creatures/10th Anniversary" tour (1982) the year before missing many markets, the "Lick It Up" tour (1983) was the first full US tour since the "Dynasty" tour of 1979.
Kiss Solo Albums Released 1978
KISS SOLO ALBUMS MILESTONE
The KISS solo albums were released on this day, September 18, 1978. Each album represented their own taste and musical influence. Gene's hosted a variety of special guests from Joe Perry, Cher, Helen Reddy and Bob Seger and displayed how the Beatles were so instrumental in Gene's writing and singing. Peter's album was a surprise to Kiss fans with a more rhythm and blues and 50's feel approach. Ace and Paul's was the most relatable identified closer to Kiss musical style.
The Kiss solo albums were a milestone in recording history being the first and only band to release solo albums on the same day unified by artwork and the KISS logo on the left hand corner.
Peter's album peaked at #43 on the Billboard Albuma, Paul's at #40, Gene's at #22 and Ace's at #26. Ace was the only member to spawn a hit single with "New York Groove" which peaked at #13 on the Billboard Singles Charts. Casablanca shipped all four albums Platinum- 4 million on one day. A feat that has never been repeated in this format.

Gibson's Top Singing Drummers: Peter Criss
Peter Criss has made Gibson's list of the top singing drummers.

4. Peter Criss (KISS)
Reportedly it wasn’t his drumming style, but rather his “Wilson Pickett-style” voice that gained Peter Criss entry into KISS as a founding member. Indeed, on such songs as “Black Diamond,” “Hard Luck Woman” and, of course, “Beth,” Criss stakes out vocal terrain that’s as exemplary as his skills at the drum kit. His autobiographical 2007 solo album, One for All, showcases all aspects of his multi-faceted talent.

Interview with "Archies Meets Kiss" Artist Dan Parent
Archie Artist Dan Parent Talks 'Archie Meets KISS' Comic Book
AssociatedPress Yahoo!
KISS Invades Riverdale! Lock Up Betty and Veronica
Eric Shirey, Yahoo! Contributor Network
Legendary rock group KISS is making an appearance in issue #628 of Archie Comics. The comic will be hitting specialty store shelves on December 28, 2011. I had the opportunity to talk to Archie Comics artist Dan Parent, who has worked on the comic series since 1987.
Are you a KISS fan? If so, what does the band mean to you?
I am definitely a KISS fan from all the way back in Junior High. The band is more than just a rock group to me. Its part of my personal history, as music often is with many people. KISS is also a part of Americana now, much like Archie. That may be why the two go so well together!
Most would call getting to draw KISS for a major comic book a privilege. Would you like to comment on the experience?
It's an incredible privilege! I see it in the eyes of people who can't wait for the series to come out. Awesome projects like this don't come along everyday.
What sort of challenges arose when drawing KISS for Archie Comics?
The only real challenge is keeping the characters true to their essence, then merging that with the classic Archie feel. It's a little tricky at first, but once I got rolling it became easier.
Describe the process of adapting the different iconic KISS personas for a comic book?
Well, writer Alex has the hard part of figuring that out in the script. He clearly spelled out their personalities there, so I had the fun part of drawing it!
Most long-time fans of KISS always think of the movie "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" and their first appearances in Marvel Comics and Howard the Duck as the defining moment of when the group stopped being a rock band and became more like kiddie comic book super heroes. How would you say KISS's appearance in Archie Comics would relate to that?
I don't think KISS ever stopped being a rock band. They embrace their fans of all ages with all kinds of projects. They're a pop culture fixture, and they fit so seamlessly in so many types of projects. It seems to be working after thirty some odd years of worldwide popularity. Archie Comics' longevity along with KISS's makes for a killer team-up!

Alice Cooper: "I'll be championing them for the Hall of Fame"
Here is an exerpt from an interview with Alice Cooper who is promoting "Welcome 2 My Nightmare" album
Justin Tedaldi, Music Q&A Examiner www.examiner.com
Photo:Kiss & Alice Cooper Band, New Zealand, 2008.
Out of curiosity, what is your relationship like with the band KISS?
Well, we knew KISS before they were KISS. Like before they called the Dodgers the Brooklyn Dodgers, they were a bunch of different things. Basically, we told them where to buy their make-up, you know? I think the only thing I said to them was, “You’re gonna get criticized anyway because you’re wearing make-up, and people are going to immediately equate you with this.” And what they said in the press was very smart, you know: “If one Alice works, than four ought to work.” And they were smart also do a show that wasn’t anything like my show. They used pyro and lasers and all the stuff that Alice didn’t use.
And Gene [Simmons] is very smart, and so is Paul Stanley, and they’re smart enough to work with Ezrin, and they kind of chose him for what they were doing, and it worked. And I’ve never been at odds with KISS, ever. They’ve always been guys that we’ve gotten along with; we’ve never really been at each other’s throats at all. In fact, I’ll probably be the one that’s championing them for the [Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame.

"Nothing else was talked about. No rumors, please. Ace and I are both happy with our lives and are not changing anything."
New Interview with Eric Singer from our friends in Argentina
INTERVIEW with ERIC SINGER
Interview courtesy of Kiss Fever
First thing, Eric, we'd like to thank you very much for your time, your kindness and for being always available to speak with us. Let's start with the interview.
Kiss Fever: Have you guys planned some new stage tricks for the new KISS show?
Eric Singer: We will have some new ideas for the next tour. Not sure exactly what as it is a work in progress...
Can you tell us something about the KISS Cruise?
You have to attend to find out the surprises that are in store for the Kruise ! :-)
We reckon that KISS, at this point of the career of the band, has nothing else to prove. In your case, being a member of the band for twenty years, do you think that there's still something special to achieve for KISS? What are the goals the band is after nowadays?
KISS is only KISS at this point. We make music that is not in competition with anyone else or trying to chase trends. MONSTER will again be a testament to this !
Do you have any plans to record again with ESP?
No plans at this time, but you never know what might happen :-)
What can you anticipate us about the MONSTER sound? Is your work in this record closer to that in "Revenge" or in "Sonic Boom"?
We do not like to give a reference to other records but that seems to always happen as a way to let people know the style or direction. MONSTER will stand on i'ts own and will be Monstrous in sound!
We'd like to know about the drum kit you're using in the recording. Is it very different of the one you used in "Sonic Boom"?
I am using the recent "live" PEARL kit I had been using on recent KISS shows. It is a great sounding kit and fits the sound and vibe of MONSTER for sure.
Have you participated more or less to decide the musical direction of the new album? Did you have more freedom to compose?
This is even more so a group or band effort. We are ALL actively involved in every step of the recording...
What inspires you when you're composing a song and/ or your drum parts?
I always keep an open mind and ears and listen to everyone's ideas. I always play for "The Song"
Gene said recently that the new album will be a mix of "Destroyer and "Revenge", casually both produced by Bob Ezrin, a guy you´re already worked with. He seems to be a producer who pays a lot of attention to details, who tends to do very technical arrangements. Is there a point in common with Paul Stanley work?
I think no one knows how to make a KISS record better than KISS and especially Paul Stanley. He has been there for every step of the bands career. And yes Bob Ezrin has been a great influence to anyone who has worked with him. I am sure that is factored into all of us.
What are the most common obstacles a drummer has to overcome in the recording sessions?
There is always the pressure on the drummer first to get the foundation recorded and establish the vibe and tempo of a particular song.
Do you think "Monster" could become a new KISS masterpiece, a new classic?
We think so :-)
Do you agree with the concept of "playing less is playing more"?
Less IS more in Rock & Roll ! It is about the vibe, attitude and songs. KISS is Rock & Roll and about feelgood music ! I always play for the song and music first.
What are your views on nowadays music? Is there any place for feelings among so much technology?
It is what it is. You can embrace it and use it to your advantage if your smart.
We really liked "Sonic Boom", it's a very good sum of KISS' career. Two years later, watching it in perspective, are you happy with the results or do you think it could have been even better?
You always make the best record you can at a given time. We love Sonic Boom and are falling in love with MONSTER now...
Gene said that "Sonic Boom" was the best KISS record in thirty years. Why didn't you play more songs of it in the live shows?
This is always a dilemma, there are just too many KISS songs to be played in a live show. We did 3 from SB.
Listening to the records, you seem kinda constrained in comparison with the way you play live and the great moments you achieve on stage. Do you have freedom to play your parts in studio or do you play with previous instructions?
I play for the song always first. Live I have a little more breathing room but try to remember to play for the Band not myself...
What did you feel the first time you wear the cat make up? How does it feel now?
It was something unique the first time. I am proud to be in this band and blessed...
For the new show, is there gonna be new costumes?
We will see...
Is Argentina part of the new world tour?
I sure hope so !!
What are your personal views of Gene, Paul, Tommy, Bruce, Ace and Peter, musically speaking?
I think everyone has played a big part of KISSTORY. I respect them all greatly and what they have done for the band on all levels.
Talking about the KISS setlist, every fan has one of his own. Were you able to choose, what would be the five KISS songs you would like to play and sing live?
We already play them !
Which one of the KISS albums has the best drum sound, and what is the worst?
COTN is best
Hotter than Hell the weakest
In your opinion, which one is the best KISS album ever? And your all-time KISS favourite song?
I LOVE Dressed to Kill and "Do You Love Me" is my Fav KISS song ever
Is there any song you're just tired of playing? Is there any special song that you would like to play but the band doesn't do in a regular basis?
I am fine playing any KISS songs
Since the people that will attend the KISS Cruise won't be "casual fans", are there any plans to prepare a special "hardcore fan" set list, just to give them something special?
I am sure they will be surprised and very happy...
Sonic Boom was never released in Argentina and most Latin America but Brazil. The remasters were never released down here, either. Who do you think we can blame for that? Why don't you just sell the albums at the venues?
That is a good question that I do not know the answer to... hopefully the record will be made available there sometime in the near future.
Are there any full recorded songs that were left out of Sonic Boom?
Nothing left over.
Most of KISS official books and DVDS don’t have Spanish subtitles. If you are a KISS fan and don’t read or speak English you are doomed. Is the band going to do something about it?
I am not sure about that. I think most bands release their products the way they were recorded.
Does it bother You to attend public events representing the band while Gene or Paul are resting in the hotel?
I love doing KISS Expo's and fan events. This is by my own choice :-)
When KISS played in Argentina for the first time in 1994, people missed 3 songs in particular and during the shows, they were asking them loudly: "Crazy Nights", "God Gave Rock 'N Roll To You II" and "Shandi". KISS came back in 1997, 1999 and 2009 and we still didn't have the chance to hear them. Since two of the song were played on the Sonic Boom tour, and "Shandi" is always performed in Australia and New Zealand, is there any chance to heard them next time you visit Argentina?
We do whatever songs are prepared for a tour. Maybe next time in Argentina one or all of those songs will be in the setlist ! :-)
Many Argentine fans complain about the lack of official merchandise stands in the stadium every time KISS plays in Argentina. Why does it happen? Who is in charge of it when KISS is on tour? Could you please pass him/her this comment?
Many times the local promoter is in charge of merchandise at the venue. KISS does not always have total control over these issues.
Another local fan concern is about the lack of chances to buy platinum or gold tickets to access the meet & greets via the website for the Argentine concerts. They are simply not for sale down here. Why is it so? Again, would you please pass this comment to the people in charge?
:-) Again, depending on the local promoter, ticket packages are not always in the band's control in all situations. We always do our best to make everyone happy !
That would be all, Eric. Thanks again for your time and kindness. One last thing: would you please send some greetings for the Argentine and south American KISS fans?
Argentina !!! KISS LOVES YOU !!!
We will see you soon...
peace/love

Gene Simmons to Host Classic Rock Roll of Honour
Classicrockmagazine.com
Gene Simmons is to host this year’s Classic Rock Roll Of Honour. And the musician to be given the coveted Living Legend award has also been revealed. Who is it? Read on…
Jeff Beck will follow in the footsteps of such greats as Jimmy Page, Lemmy, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and Ozzy Osbourne in being recipient of this honour.
Says Beck: “The Classic Rock Roll Of Honour has always been about great music that inspires and excites others. To be named as a ‘Living Legend’ amongst so many fantastic musicians is an honour. When I was a 6 year old boy I heard Les Paul’s ‘How High the Moon’ over the radio and from that moment on I knew that I wanted to play the guitar and make music. That moment has led me to where I am today. Rock music continues to evolve and its great how established acts inspire the upcoming bands and vice versa, producing more and more great music. I am proud to be a small part of this”.
Simmons will host the event at The Roundhouse in London on Wednesday, November 9. And he’s clearly looking forward to it.
“On that momentous occasion, the planets will align, living legends will gather to honour their own and London will become the centre of the rock & roll universe. It’s one thing being a voracious and loyal reader of Classic Rock, but it’s another to be in the same room as the people who have inspired me to stop flipping burgers and jump up on stage and have a go at it myself.”

KISS's Simmons: Political Commentator, Hebrew Expert
By Arnold Agnes/The Jewish Tribune
Gene Simmons, the man who became identified with the quintessential heavy metal band KISS as a singer, song writer and rock bassist, has now gained two new personas: political commentator and astonishingly an expert on the pronunciation of Modern Hebrew. It should be explained that Simmons, né Chaim Witz, was born in Haifa and moved with his parents to the United States at age eight. Last month he announced that he was supporting the presidential bid of Rick Perry, the Texas governor; Simons was apparently unperturbed by Perry's fundamentalist Christian beliefs.
Simmons advocacy in this context is not actually surprising, given his public criticism of US President Barack Obama. The former musician's daring avant garde embrace of a type of music was not exactly mainstream three decades ago when heavy metal was all the rage among the younger set. Supporting Rick Perry's presidential bid is consistent with Simmons' leading-edge, artistic-political ideology.
What is surprising is that the icon of heavy metal music, the winner of many awards for his song writing and playing has now become, believe it or not, a source for scholarly commentary on the evolution of the pronunciation of Israeli Hebrew. The story is fascinating.
Among the many anomalies in the Hebrew language is that technically speaking, you have to know the intricacies of Hebrew grammar to be able to really speak it properly. But that is just part of the problem.
If you were raised in a traditional Ashkenazi household or if you were educated in a yeshiva - even if you understood the complexities of the Hebrew vowel systems and the exoticism of the beged kafat pointing of initial consonants, your pronunciation of Hebrew would reflect a middle European Yiddish twang.
Despite these eccentricities Ashkenazi Hebrew was the dominant strain during that period in the 19th and early 20th century when the Hebrew language and literature emerged from its somnolent stage and began to enjoy a renaissance due to a number of diverse factors - the east European geography in which Jews lived, the Haskalah or Jewish Enlightenment, the rise of both cultural and political Zionism and the resettling of Eretz Yisroel during the several aliyot or ascensions to the Jewish state-in-the-making.
However, anyone who has visited Israel and certainly the vast majority of the inhabitants of the state, know that modern spoken Hebrew represents a modified form of the traditional Sephardic pronunciation, in which the stress on an individual word is on the last syllable rather than on the second last one. The only people who use Ashkenazi accentuation in speech are the deeply pious and they do so by habituation and ideological purity.
Miryam Seal, a linguist, literary scholar and historian who teaches at Queens College, New York City, introduces us to the revolutionary shift in the accentuation of spoken Hebrew in the introduction to her ground-breaking study, A New Sound in Hebrew Poetry: Poetics, Politics, Accent (Indiana University Press. Bloomington, Indiana, 2010) by citing an interview by a journalist with an unlikely source about language transformation, Gene Simmons.
Citing an interview with Simmons in which the musician was referred to as a "Mama's Boy," Simmons snapped back: "I stand guilty as charged and proud to say that I am a mama's boy. However, point one is that you mispronounced my Hebrew name. It's not Hayim, which is the sort of snivelling please-don't-beat-me-up Ashkenazi way... It's Hayim, emphasis on the second vowel, like the Israelis do."
Professor Segal goes on to observe that Simmons was being hypercorrect, that while the stress on the last vowel of a word is consistent with modern Hebrew and is occasionally used in the purified speech of radio announcers, the rule does not apply with names and that it is perfectly acceptable in modern Hebrew even today to put the stress on the first vowel on the name Hayim.
Simmons-Witz, who recently appeared on a TV program celebrating his Israeli roots and experience, can be excused for not being up on the finer points of Modern Hebrew, but it's refreshing to see a serious scholar quoting him in this context!
