ACE FREHLEY: BACK IN THE ANOMALY GOORVE
NEW INTERVIEW WITH BRAVEWORDS
(from Bravewords/Bloody Knuckles)
By Mitch Lafon
It’s been twenty years, four Presidents, and many receding hairlines since ACE FREHLEY last released an album. Of course, the Spaceman hasn’t been missing in action. He returned to KISS for the highly successful Reunion tour, the ill-conceived 3-D Psycho Circus tour and the never-ending Farewell tour, but most importantly Ace faced his alcohol demons face on and won. September 15th marks the return of Ace as a recording artist with the release of Anomaly (his fifth and best solo studio album or certainly on par with his classic 1978 album), but more importantly the day celebrates Ace’s third anniversary of walking away from the bottle and re-claiming his life and health. The Spaceman took Bravewords on a mattress shopping excursion for our sometime distracted, but pleasant discussion of all things Ace.
Mitch Lafon: You’ve made a great hard rock album with no outside vocalists. Was it important to make this a true Ace Frehley album?
Ace Frehley: “I think that’s what the fans wanted, so that’s what I went for. My touring drummer Scott Cogan did a wonderful job of background vocals on ‘Sister’ and ‘Pain In The Neck’ and there’s a couple of gals singing on ‘Genghis Khan’, but pretty much I did all the vocals and backgrounds. ”
ML: Was it challenging to sing all the vocals? I know, at times, with KISS you were hesitant to cut a vocal and on your previous solo albums you had outside singers. Do you have more confidence in your voice now?
AF: “Oh, yeah. It wasn’t scary at all and it was fun being in charge and producing. If I had hired a producer the album might have been finished a whole lot sooner, but it was great to have the creative control and be able to try different things with my voice and harmonize with myself. It’s always a pleasure (laughs).”
ML: Are you happy with the results?
AF: “Very much so.”
ML: Was there a deliberate attempt to recapture that ‘1978’ sound or is this simply ‘Ace music’ as it comes out of you?
AF: “I was aiming more for an analog sound rather than a digital sound, and I was trying to get as close to that first album as possible simply because everybody cites that as their favorite Ace Frehley record.”

GUITAR PLAYER EDITOR PREVIEWS 5 SONGS OFF NEW KISS ALBUM
The editor of Guitar Player magazine has previewed five songs off the new KISS album, which is scheduled for release on October 6. He writes on the publication's Facebook page:
"Heard 5 songs. If you dig KISS, you're gonna dig this new album. Paul sings his ass off. Eric plays some amazingly powerful drums. Gene was finally made to play all of his bass parts (apparently, in the past, if someone had a cool bass idea, he let them play it), and he DOES have a pretty driving sound. Finally, Paul and Tommy's guitars sound HUGE -- with some fab riffs and '70s-style solos."

ACE FREHLEY & NICKLEBACK - VIDEO
MY LETTER TO GENE
Dear Gene,
You, guys make dreams come true. You brought tears to my eyes when I watched the ELLEN show and the surprise KISS brought to David. KISS has plenty of heart and soul. It was an amazing moment to see the look on his face when you guys came out. I am getting goose-bumps just writing this. It's funny, 18 years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer with a 20% chance of survival, and this was the second time around. I swear, I listened to KISS, as always. Even went to the ASYLUM show in Philly in a KISS bandana to keep my bald head warm (the show was around Christmas, so it was cold). I am still here and so is little David. Thank you for making his dreams come true... You've made mine.Thank you for being YOU!KISS die-hard until the end...Frank from NJ

KISS ROCK- NIGHT # 1 - CASINO RAMA
Casino Rama, Ontario - July 20, 2009 Photo Courtesy of Splash Magazine
By JASON MacNEIL - Sun Media
For two nights this week, legendary New York rock band KISS made it feel like north of Toronto was Rama Rock City.
And while the main core of bassist/singer Gene Simmons and guitarist/singer Paul Stanley are quite long in the tooth, the quartet brought all the explosions, fake gore, fireballs, fire-breathing, kabuki-esque makeup and customary costumes they’ve thrived on for 35 years.
A near-capacity crowd for night one of the two-night stand at Casino Rama was treated to over two hours and 20 songs of spectacle as KISS rounded off a brief but successful Canadian trek celebrating the 35th anniversary of their live Alive! album.
And it was a whole heap of oldies which had most on their feet beginning with the rather rollicking Deuce which saw the band – and even drummer Eric Singer’s kit – descend from the rafters to loud applause.
Whether it was the eye candy or the whole bells and whistles, KISS succeeded in getting fans enthused, even if some of the songs came across not as crisp as the studio versions. This was especially true when Stanley’s voice never came close to hitting a few challenging high notes during the disco-era but musically strong I Was Made For Lovin’ You in the encore.

KISS ROCKS HALIFAX LAST NIGHT JULY 18, 2009 - VIDEO
The sea of thousands of fans dressed up in rain ponchos, slickers and heavy weather gear looked more like the Kiss navy than the Kiss army on Halifax’s North Common on Saturday.
Yet the fear of smeared face paint didn’t deter dozens of the faithful from transforming themselves into the Starchild, the Demon, Space Ace and the Cat Man for the occasion. For all anybody knows, the real Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer could have been roaming the crowd and no one would have been the wiser.
I didn’t feel compelled to put on the greasepaint, but if I had a time machine and could go back to the mid-70s to ask my 11-year-old self what bands he’d most like to see, the top two choices would be the Beatles and Kiss. The Beatles had been broken up for years at that point, and there was no way in Hades that my parents would let me go near those so-called "Knights in Satan’s Service" and their legendary shows at the Halifax Forum.

PAUL STANLEY INTERVIEW VIA ATLANTA
Courtesy of Atlanta Entertianment Monthly
With KISS having recently come off of a huge stadium tour across South America, Paul Stanley continues to keep busy. About ten years ago, as the result of a divorce, a friend suggested he try painting as a cathartic way of helping to express his emotions. He went and purchased brushes and canvasses and he’s been at it ever since. Stanley has never been one to stand on the sideline. In the past he’s played the lead in the Phantom of the Opera in Toronto and toured on his own in support of his solo release “Live to Win.” He's currently producing the forthcoming KISS album, the band's first release of new material in eleven years, and continues to show his art work at Wentworth Galleries across the country. He recently took time out of his hectic schedule to speak with us.
Between touring with KISS, producing the new album, your growing family, your artwork, you’ve got a lot going on.
It’s been busy. Four months ago I had a little baby girl. Other than that we just finished a stadium tour of South America playing to anywhere from forty to sixty thousand people a night. Before that we did our biggest, most successful tour of Europe playing seven weeks, thirty shows to over four hundred thousand people. Then, I’ve got my art shows, which are normally once a month in different cities and I’m about a week from completing the first KISS album in eleven years which should be out in September. Other than that, I’m taking it easy!
With regards to your artwork, having begun to paint as a way to express emotions from the divorce ten years ago, with that now well behind you, has your approach changed with so many positive things going on in your life?
Any creative outlet will come from whatever inspiration or desperation happens to be going on. Certainly as life evolves you hopefully draw from other experiences. My life, it couldn’t be a better story if I wrote it myself, so there’s no shortage of inspiration. I tell people; “If you’re not inspired every day when you wake up then you should either go back to sleep or change your life.”

NEW KISS PHOTO BOOK
NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN, VINTAGE KISS PHOTOS FEATURED IN NEW BOOK
As a long-time fan of rock and a resident of Enid, Oklahoma, Richard Galbraith has attended countless concerts since the early ‘70s, and documented most of them with this photography. Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Black Sabbath (among many others) have all passed through the lens of Mr. Galbraith. In his first-ever photo book, ‘Richard Galbraith Photography Presents: KISS,’ the reader is offered a glimpse of almost every single major concert the masked quartet played in Oklahoma from 1976 through 1986. Comprised of nearly 100 never-before-seen pix (in both color and black and white), the book also contains notes and memories of the shows from Richard, from interviews conducted by renowned rock writer Greg Prato. Additionally, many of the photographs in the book are available for individual sale through Richard (as well as more other photos not included in the book).
The shows that are photographed and featured in the book include:
3/8/76 - Tulsa, Oklahoma [Tulsa Assembly Center]
7/26/76 - Kansas City, Missouri [Municipal Auditorium]
1/6/77 - Tulsa, Oklahoma [Tulsa Assembly Center]

KISS Juggernaut of rock blows 'em away
OTTAWA/ BLUESFEST
KISS cranks up the spectacle for record Bluesfest crowd
By Lynn Saxberg, The Ottawa CitizenJuly 16, 2009
Photograph by Jean Levac,
Ottawa Citizen
Nothing could stop KISS in front of a record-setting crowd of 30,000 at Bluesfest last night. Not the rain, the decibel limit or even the snub to Shannon Tweed, who watched her man, bassist Gene Simmons, perform from a freshly installed VIP section on a raised platform near the sound tent.
Up on the massive stage, the band steamrolled over any obstacle, be it weather-related or bureaucratic, and delivered a concert that lived up to all expectations in terms of lights, volume and special effects. The lights were blinding, the sound was blasting and the effects included pyro, confetti cannons, aerial wires and their trademark monster-glam costumes.
But what about the music? Well, you have to hand it to lead singer Paul Stanley for taking over the reins to the legendary '70s hard-rockers. When he wasn't shredding his voice at the microphone, he acted as host of the rock extravaganza, and did most of the talking. Word is he's also the producer responsible for getting the band back to basics on its forthcoming album, the first in a decade, due for release in October.

ACE FREHLEY/NEW INTERVIEW
Kiss‘ original guitarist, Ace Frehley, has primarily focused on playing live shows since he left the band in 2002, though no new studio material has surfaced. But that’s soon about to change. September 15th will see the release of Ace’s first solo album in nearly 20 years, Anomaly, via his own label, Bronx Born Records. Produced almost entirely by Frehley, the album shows why many rock and metal guitarists list “Space Ace” as a prime six-string influence, as evidenced by the epic “Genghis Khan” and a kick ass cover of Sweet’s “Fox on the Run.” Frehley recently sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the new album, his ex-bandmates and kicking booze once and for all.
The September 15th release of Anomaly will be your three-year anniversary of sobriety.
I’ve accepted the fact that I can never drink again as long as I live, and I’m ok with it. And it should be easy when you think about it - some people get allergic to shellfish. When they eat it, they break out or get sick. And you know what those people say to themselves? “I can’t eat shellfish anymore for the rest of my life.” And they’re ok with it. But for some reason, when it comes to alcohol, people get crazy. It’s getting past that.
Would you ever consider another Kiss reunion?
I’m having so much fun with this new album. It’s not something I think about at all anymore. The reunion tour was supposed to be it — that’s what they told me when they asked me to do it. But then they go, “Now we want to do a farewell tour.” I said, “OK, I’ll do a farewell tour.” It ended in Australia, and then I get a phone call when I come back, “Now we want to do something else.” Then Gene is on my answering machine, “Ace, we’re going to go out. If you don’t want to do it, we’re going to use another guitar player.” What is that, a threat? I didn’t even answer the phone [laughs]. That was that.

KISS' RECORD CROWD AT OTTAWA'S BLUESFEST
Around 30,000 music fans came out to the Bluesfest stage to take in the glitz and pyrotechnics of the well-known, makeup wearing rockers.Shannon Tweed, former Ottawa resident and partner of Kiss rock star Gene Simmons, was one of a record number of fans who turned out at the band's Bluesfest show. (Courtesy of Mike Carroccetto)
They may not have rock-and-rolled all night — as one of their songs suggests — but the band started the show 45 minutes early to give concertgoers a whole two hours to rock out.
"Kiss is the best band in the world. Rock on Kiss!" said one concertgoer who came out to see the show.
"I see Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck — Kiss is the best band at Bluesfest."
Kiss's setup, said organizers, required a 50-member stage crew to put up the lights, aerial wires and pyrotechnics that made up Ottawa's biggest Bluesfest show.

KISS IN SARNIA LAST NIGHT
KISS fans 'love it loud'
By TARA HAGAN • Sarnia Observer • July 10, 2009
Thousands of screaming fans "loved-it-loud" last night when legendary rockers KISS took to the stage at Sarnia Rogers Bayfest.
“How you doin’ people?” yelled Paul Stanley to a screaming crowd, with cameras high in the air, at 10 p.m. sharp. “Did you come tonight to get some rock and roll?“Well you came to the right place.”
Outrageous pyrotechnics exploded on the massive stage as frontman Gene Simmons belted out the opening hit, “Deuce,” amid a thundering roar from an 18,000-strong crowd, dominated by their famous fan following known affectionately as the KISS Army.
Stanley followed up with “Strutter,” before embarking on a number of classic hits.
"This probably was the most prep we’ve ever done for a show,” said organizer Michele Stokley, citing a fleet of eight trucks, four buses, 900 pounds of dry ice and enough pyrotechnics to fire-bomb a city.

"JOE" WARMING UP FOR KISS 12/22/1974
By Trevor Wilhelm, The Windsor StarJuly 11, 2009
WINDSOR, Ont. -- Randy Girard loves his wife, but she’s no blood-spitting Demon.
Girard will take a nostalgic, ear-splitting walk down memory lane Saturday night as he sits in the crowd at Caesars Windsor Colosseum to watch a little hard rock quartet known as Kiss.
It goes back a long way, but he has a connection to the grease paint-wearing, big-haired band that other aspiring musicians would kill for. On Dec. 22, 1974, his old band Joe played to a capacity crowd in London, Ont., as the warmup act for Kiss.
He later hung out in the dressing room with Gene Simmons, also known by his stage persona The Demon, and the rest of the band.

KISS KICK OFF CANADIAN TOUR TONIGHT IN SARNIA
KISS GET MASSIVE BREAFAST IN SARNIA THIS MORNING
Steamed veggies? For KISS?
By TYLER KULA • Sarnia Observer • July 10, 2009
SARNIA — There’s no predicting how things might unfold at Sarnia Rogers Bayfest. Just ask head chef Alastair Mackay.
When the legendary rock band KISS rolled into Sarnia earlier than scheduled this morning, he had to lay out a massive breakfast for band and crew well before the sun rose over Centennial Park.
“We didn’t find that out until about 10:30 p.m. (Thursday) that they were going to have a continental at five-thirty in the morning,” he said. “You just have to be pretty versatile.”
The well-known Sarnia chef has worked Bayfest the past three years while preparing meals for some of music world’s biggest stars.

KISS' LEGENDARY COBO HALL TO CLOSE
(courtesy of LIVEATCOBO.Com)
The legendary concert venue COBO arena is to become the victim of a city expansion plan. This historic structure has hosted KISS concerts on many occasions, not the least of which was the series of shows that became the KISS ALIVE! album. As producers of the documentary film "Live at COBO" we wish to get the word out to all artist who have a connection to COBO.
KISS PERFORMING FIREHOUSE AT COBO HALL, 1977.
Detroit area filmmakers Douglas Akers, Lisa Hagopian, Eric Harabadian and Jake Hall are currently producing an independent full-length documentary feature entitled “Live at Cobo.” The film will focus on the origins of Cobo Arena and its rise as a world class venue via the remarkable variety of events presented there and the long-lasting impact it has had on our culture through musical, political and professional sporting means.
The filmakers have been granted full access to COBO arena for filming interviews there with the artists about their experience there during its golden era. Time is running short for us to give artists one last opportunity to step into the hall that help make music history. Please pass this information along to anyone that can help us document the stories before COBO is gone.

GENE SIMMONS INTERVIEWED- JULY 9, 2009
(Courtesy Ottawa Express via Blabbermouth.com)
Ottawa Xpress recently conducted an interview with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On KISS' upcoming world tour, which begins in September:
"There hasn't been an important rock band to emerge in the last 25 years that will still mean something in 100 years. But from the end of the 1950s to 1980, there was ELVIS, THE BEATLES, THE STONES, LED ZEP, ABBA — say what you will but they wrote great songs — KISS, there's a hundred bands from that period. All the music from ELVIS to KISS was born before MTV, cellphones and the Internet. KISS still trains hard and every emo band at 19 can shine our boot heels! They're gonna get a lesson [from us]: You blow the goddamn place up!"
On rock critics:
"You know, I discovered a band [over 30 years ago] called VAN HALEN, I signed them [to my record label] and produced their demo. Critics hated them. When singer David Lee Roth was asked why the critics hated VAN HALEN and loved Elvis Costello, Roth said, 'Because they look like Costello.' It's still true."
On Michael Jackson:
"I knew Michael and met him. He was shy and charming and self-effacing and obviously very talented. [For me the real story is] sadly about the little boys — not a single girl — all of them little boys under 13 [who] sued him for child molestation. He was never convicted but we know he paid $20-million to settle a case. I think [Jackson] doth protest too much. The story is not complete. I want to hear what those little boys have to say."
On how Ace Frehley once trashed the band's fans because they were mostly kids, and was taken to task by both Simmons and Paul Stanley:
"Ace is a sweetheart and has a heart of gold. But he was a major drug addict and alcoholic which is why he and Peter [Criss] were thrown out of the band. You know, rock stars are morons. What Ace said about the kids was stupid and uncaring."
On Chastity Bono, the daughter of his ex-girlfriend Cher, who is transitioning from female to male:
"I love Chas. I was living with Cher when Chas and [her brother] Elijah were kids and I was a substitute dad for a while. Life is short and we should all make up and be happy. And everybody else be damned if Chas isn't happy today, God bless. If Chas is happy, then she will have found the secret of life."

TORONTO'S DEAD IDOLS OPEN FOR KISS
(from Yorkregion.com)
BY KEELY GRASSER
Jason Manara is a singer-songwriter, a drummer, a music teacher and owns a clothing line.
And he's about to rub shoulders with one of rock 'n' roll's most entrepreneurial stars: Gene Simmons.
The 23-year-old Unionville man will be opening for KISS during some of the band's Canadian tour this summer.
He was asked to drum for Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols, a Toronto-based band, for the KISS gigs.
"I didn't grow up being a hardcore KISS fan," Mr. Manara said.
But he admires Gene Simmons' branding. KISS is regarded as an industry in terms of merchandising and branding and Mr. Simmons himself has many side projects, including a reality TV show, record label and clothing line.
Mr. Manara said he's hoping to sit down with Mr. Simmons to talk.
And he said the gig is a great opportunity - he'll be playing for KISS
